Yummy Thursday: Cowboy Slice Bake

Welcome to another Yummy Thursday! I look so forward to this because I hopelessly addicted to yummy food and this gives me an excuse to hunt for new recipes and try! :)

Please note: I am NO cooking expert. I play around in my kitchen and half the time something works and half the time it doesn't. The point is I appreciate food in a big way and just want to share that love with you. If you are looking for new Betty Crocker or Jamie Oliver style recipes... this is not your place to look. This is a place for just loving family friendly food.

This week on Yummy Thursday I want to share a new creation I made yesterday called a
Cowboy Slice Bake. It doesn't look beautiful but it tastes GREAT!

A Slice is basically a pie without a pie dish and is VERY english. You can make them with Shortcrust or Flaky pastry. You basically just lay out your dough, add a filling, and bring together into a form (a slice bake like I did for example) and seal the edges.

Anyways... growing up I LOVED a version called the Sausage Bean and Cheese Slice from a big Bakery chain called Gregg's in England. Now I am in Germany and crave them all the time... so yesterday I decided to try my own! Thus... the Cowboy Pasty Bake was born.
Ingredients:2 portions of Puff Pastry (I bought pre-made and pre-rolled becauase it is easier!)
Baked Beans -
True English Baked Beans are just Baked Beans in a tomato juice, but any version would taste fine I am sure. I am a huge fan of American Baked Beans so I am confident that would taste great too.
Hot Dogs
Grated Cheese (cheddar is best)

Ok so it is super simple to make....

1. Put your first layer of puff pastry on a baking tray.
2. Squeeze out as much juice from the can of baked beans as possible and spread the beans over the pastry.

3. Chop up your hot dogs and sprinkle over.

4. Sprinkle your grated cheese over. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

5. Place the second layer of puff pastry over the top and roll up the edges to make a crust and to seal the Slice.

6. Pierce the lid of the Slice with a fork and brush with beaten egg.

7. Bake at 220 degrees c (430 degrees f) for until crispy and golden brown.
The Slice should have puffed up nicely.

8. Slice up and enjoy! :)

  1. That cowboy slice looks like something my kids would adore for a snow day lunch. I could make a whole theme day for the little one - crafting paper cowboy hats, suction dart gun shooting gallery, etc. I'll have to use homemade puff pastry, because the older one is gluten-free, but I usually keep some in the freezer. Thanks for sharing.
